Description
Short story:
The AS-90 is the latest new AFV to enter service with the British Army and is considered by many to be the most advanced mobile artillery system in the world. The AS-90 carries a crew consisting of a driver and four or three operators. The AS-90 is equipped with a 155mm .39 or .52 caliber barrel. The system fires the full range of current 155mm NATO rounds. Mounting a 52 caliber barrel instead of the standard 39 caliber increases the range to over 40 kilometers. The vehicle is powered by a Cummins V8 diesel engine with 660 horsepower.
The vehicle has an all-welded steel armor structure that is capable of withstanding 7.62mm and 14.5mm armor-piercing shells and 152mm shell fragments. An enhanced version of the howitzer, the Desert AS-90 (AS-90D), was built to provide high performance in harsh desert environments, including a heat shield installed on the turret roof and sunlight reflective paint to protect the crew from hot metal burns. The AS-90 entered service with the British Army in 1992 and entered service in 1993, and has now replaced both the Abbott 105mm SP and the M109 155mm SP in the Royal Artillery. The AS-90 is deployed in Germany and with IFOR in the former Yugoslavia.
