Description
Short story:
During World War II, the United States built three types of aircraft carriers: the Essex-class heavy carriers, the Independence-class light carriers, and the "escort" carriers. The 24 Essex-class ships were not distinguished by any great design innovations, but above all by being in the right place at the right time and well performing the tasks that history had given them. The Essex-class aircraft carriers served in too many numbers and too late in the war to gain the fame of the pre-war aircraft carriers they often bore, but they served longer than any other class and through wars their builders never dreamed of. Those surviving today as museum ships are a fitting tribute to the class that ruled the Pacific fifty years ago.
